Clinical Observation of Tuberculous Meningitis in Children



Abstract
The authors reviewed 184 cases of tuberculous meningitis, who were admitted to the Department of Pediatrics of St. Mary¢¥s Hospital during the period of 11 years from Jan. 1967 until Dec. 1977. The results were as follows:
1) The highest annual incidence was 31 cases in 1971, and the annual incidence of patient was gradually decreased.
2) The -highest incidence by. age was 89.1% under the age of 6 years and 70% of cases were between the age of 3 and 6 years. Male to female ratio was about 2:1.
3) 32.6% of cases were noted in the spring, 29.4% in summer, 19% in the autumn and 19% in winter.
4) Family history of tuberculosis was found in 52 cases (28.3%).
5) The, chief complaints on admission were in order of vomiting, fever convulsion, drowsiness, irritability, headache. Meningeal irritation sign on admission was noted in 81.0% of all cases.
6) Tuberclin test revealed positive reaction in 41.9% of all cases.
7) The overall mortality rate was 16.8% and the recurrence rate was 6.4%.
